I have come into possesion for an Altos 386 series 1000 box and was
wondering about running linux on the beast.

The machine has 16 serial ports, 2 off SCSI hard drivers, 1 off tape
drive, 1 off 5 1/4 floppy, no vdu card and no mouse or keyboard. Every
thing seems to be proprietary and thus little hope exists for changing the
system setup. The only PC standard parts seem to be the Intel 386 and 387.

I know I will have to create a set of 5 1/4 install disks.
The kerenl will need SCSI, serial console and what else compiled in?

Does the kernel support the serial ports fitted in this thing?

There is a UPS fitted to the machine via a proprietary link of some kind,
will Linux support this?

If the Linux route is a non starter does anyone know where I might locate
a development kit for this OS (Altos System V Release 3 386/1000 Version
e), preferably one that will allow cross development from my Linux box
(i386 elf) in C.

Many thanks to all,
