I'm learning now so sorry if I write a nonsense here.
I think that if you have the pcmcia connected to the computer before
switching it on and it is ide, when linux starts up then the zip should
be detected, isn't it?
If it is detected you can mount it, if it isn't you will not be able
to mount it as /dev/hd*
typing "dmesg" will give you some information about the start up,
perhaps you can get a clue there.
