I don't know much but may be able to get you started.  First of all
they are phasing out the cuaX devices, use it's respective tty device.
 You should check but I think that it is tty01 or tty1 in your case. 
Second /dev/modem is just a symbolic link to /dev/cuaX or /dev/ttyX so
you should use /dev/modem.  When you change modems or system
configuration all you will have to change is the link from /dev/modem
to /dev/???? instead of having to change all of your programs device
settings.
