So far as I am aware with one modem, you can't. If mgetty is enabled,
action by ppp is interpretted as a contact attempt, and after failure
disconnected. If you find out otherwise, please let me know.
What I use is a trio of /etc/inittab files
inittab-mgetty-disabled - kermit, ppp, etc.
inittab-mgetty-enabled - fax and remote login
inittab-mgetty-ringback - remote control
My /etc/inittab is a copy of one of these three. My frequency
of use and duty cycle is such that the cost of copying inittab is only
a small annoyance.
