I have exactly the same problem here. I don't know the answer yet but it
has to do with passwd and shadow. Somehow they can get messed up in the
Slackware version of linux and I have still not found a way to fix it. Of
course if you rename shadow to something else then the passwd file would
work fine. But they you would have little security left.

If you find out how to fix this, I would appreciate hearing how..
