this is not entirely true. first, for some good cards, you don't need
to do anything at all, because the driver can detect all cards, and will
configure them. for instance, Tulip cards. this might well apply only
to PCI, as well. next, you don't necessarily have to provide the irq/addr:
"ether=0,0,eth1" will trigger a probe for a second ne2k, for instance,
though some drivers do require being told were they are.
