hard link is a second (third ...) entry in the inode table to the same   
physical blocks on the partition. this is why you can not make hard link   
accross different partitions. a file is really deleted when the number of   
hard link to it becomes zero (there is a counter of hard links to a file   
that can be checked using ls -l (2nd field).

soft link is physically a file on your partition (takes some room, not   
much though) interpreted by the system. its content describe what other   
file should be opened by the system. this second file referenced by a   
soft link can be on another partition, or can even no longer exist. there   
is no way to know how many soft links are pointing to a file.
