I'm running RedHat 5.2 - I have these 2 commands in my .tcshrc file
that work great, although there are other ways to do it:

alias ls ls -F --color=yes
setenv LS_COLORS "*.tar=1;31":"*.gz=1;31":"*.zip=1;31"
