Hello,
I am having real troubles setting up my Laserjet 4L under kernel 2.2.6
and I was hoping you could help me.
I recompiled the kernel with support for parallel ports and printers.
Everything looks fine during the boot process:
I see the following lines in dmesg:
parport0: PC-style at 0x378 [SPP,PS2]
parport0: no IEEE-1284 device present.
[... (I have printer support as a module, so the rest is all the way at
the bottom:)]
lp0: using parport0 (polling).
Looks like it should work, does it not? But if I try something like
'echo test>/dev/lp0',
the data LED on the printer goes on, while the 'Ready' LED blinks once
and reamins on after that, also. Both LEDs stay on until I unplug the
printer. Needless to say that nothing is printed.
If I try to use lpr, I get the same effect. I tried lp1 and lp2, but for
both I get a message that the device doesn't exist.
Would anybody happen to have any idea what I might be doing wrong?
TIA,
Juergen
