I have the very same card, #9 Reality 334 with an Virge GX/2 chipset,
4MB RAM. It SUCKS with KDE -- same problems which you describe below.

I have a year and 1/2 old Matrox Millennium II PCI card with 8MB (I have
bus mastering enabled on the system board for this slot, it seems to
help :), and it is GREAT at all resolutions and color depths on every wm
I've had running. Enlight, fvwm2, olvwm, ice. KDE looks gorgeous with
it. These cards can be had cheap.
