Hi. To set the hostname on my Linux machine (Debian 2.1 slink, Kernel
2.0.36) I have a startup script that reads it from the file: /etc/hostname
Anyway, regardless of the source of this hostname setting... can anyone
supply a definitive answer on what the format of the "hostname" setting
should be?
IOW, when I set the machine's hostname (hostname <hostname>), should I use
the machine name OR simply the FQDN?
Either way seems to wrk in the sense that if I run "hostname --fqdn" I get
the full FQDN as a response, whether I've set the hostname using the
machinename or the full FQDN. OTOH, if I just use the machinename when
setting the hostname, I only get the machinename if I run "hostname" (no
arguments).
Although either way does appear to function correctly, I'm sure there must
be an "official" policy or method for setting the hostname. Anyone know
where I might find this information? The man pages and various FAQs do not
get into enough detail regarding this, and while I have seen that most
machines use the full FQDN, I'm not trusting enough that they've done so
because it's correct or because they "thought" it was correct. =)
Thanks.
