Dan,
As far as video cards is concerned, it's not Linux neccesarily or your
Distrobution that is what determines whether or not your card is compatible
with X, but X itself that determines that. I'm assuming that not wanting to
purchase a commercial X server you'd prefer to use XFree86. You can find
the requirements for XFree86 at their site http://www.xfree86.org
As to the issue of a sound card. Almost any truly Sound Blaster compatible
card is useful and will provide you with basic sound. I've used an Opti931
based card, both revisions of the Ensoniq 1370 and 1371, as well as my Sound
Blaster Live! with varrying amounts of usefulness. The Opti based card at
the time I used it required me to purchase the OSS drivers, which I would
avoid buying a card that would make me do that :) If you have a PCI slot
get an over/older stocked Ensoniq 1370 for about $20 or less and that'll do
just fine.
