There's nothing special about a cable modem. All you need is a working ethernet
card. The bigger problem is that some providers will refuse to help you if
you're not running Windows. This is because they have no staff trained to
understand how the Linux network configuration utilities work. They don't know,
therefore, what to ask you to do so that they can try to figure out what's
wrong when there's a problem.
