Building a linux system from scratch

Has any body here, or someone you know tried to build a linux system
from scratch?  That is, compiling every or most of the software
installed on a system.  E.g, c libraries, init, X, etc etc.

I'm interested in looking at what's involved in doing something like
that, and wondering where I can find resources to guide me.
