Yes, from your ISP, making sure that it is not in one pf the 'internal'
ranges
that I mentioned previously. Also make sure that you are allowed to
assign it to
your own domain. Not all ISP's allow this. Your ISP should then handle
NSI for
you.

Well to me ,here in the UK, that price doesn't sound too bad. But then
again
we're used to being ripped off over here :~(

No, the address will have to be allocated by whoever supplies your
connection and
they should then make sure that your domain is on the nameservers. It
will come
out of their block(s) of IP numbers.

You can find out what range your IP will be in as follows (assuming that
your ISP
does not give you an 'internal' address). I'll use my own service
provider as an
example, although they don't provide static IP's. My service provider is
a
company called Global Internet.

First, connect by modem as normal then find the IP that has been
allocated.

[root@eden /root]# ifconfig ppp0
ppp0      Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
          inet addr:195.147.141.105  P-t-P:195.147.128.13
Mask:255.255.255.255
          UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:313 errors:3 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:3
          TX packets:313 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:10

Then use the appropriate whois server for the address range. In my case,
addresses beginning with 195 are allocated to the RIPE block(Europe) so
I need to
use whois.ripe.net. The other main whois servers are whois.arin.net for
the
American area and whois.apnic.net for the Asian/Pacific area. There is
also
whois.mil.net(I think that's right) for American military bases etc.

That should give all the info with regard to your ISP. You may find that
there
are several blocks of IP addresses if it's a big provider, whereas
Global
Internet only has the one block (195.147.0.0 - 195.147.255.255).

I assume that you are in the USA, since you mentioned dollars above. If
this is
the case, you will need to change:

'whois [EMAIL PROTECTED]'

to

'whois <yourIPnumber>@whois.arin.net'

> Am I talking about virtual hosting if in my case I have 5 domains
> and 1 linux box?

Yes

> Will one static IP be enough in my situation with virtual hosting?

No, because even if you could register 5 domains to a single IP, there
would be
no way for your machine to know which domain the request was for, as the
request
headers only contain IP numbers. This is why you often get a delay while
your
browser looks up the address that corresponds to the name you have
entered.

You require one IP for each domain/virtual host and would configure your
linux
machine like this (I'll assume for the example that your IP's are a
consecutive
block, from 200.0.0.1 to 200.0.0.5).

In /etc/hosts

127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
200.0.0.1 www.domain1.com
200.0.0.2 www.domain2.com
200.0.0.3 www.domain3.com
200.0.0.4 www.domain4.com
200.0.0.5 www.domain5.com

And either use linuxconf to set up the aliases or have the following
somewhere in
your boot scripts (/etc/rc.d/rc.local is as good a place as any). I'll
assume
eth0 for a cable modem or DSL. You will also need to 'man ifconfig' for
configuration options relevant to your circumstances.

ifconfig eth0:0 inet 200.0.0.1
ifconfig eth0:1 inet 200.0.0.2
ifconfig eth0:2 inet 200.0.0.3
ifconfig eth0:3 inet 200.0.0.4
ifconfig eth0:4 inet 200.0.0.5

You then need to set up the virtual hosts in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
(on RH).
I've kept these simple for brevity.

<VirtualHost www.domain1.com>
ServerAdmin [EMAIL PROTECTED]
DocumentRoot /home/www/domain1.com/public_html
ServerName www.domain1.com
ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /home/www/domain1.com/cgi-bin/
ErrorLog logs/www.domain1.com-error_log
TransferLog logs/www.domain1.com-access_log
</VirtualHost>

<VirtualHost www.domain2.com>
...............
</VirtualHost>

<VirtualHost www.domain3.com>
...............
</VirtualHost>

<VirtualHost www.domain4.com>
...............
</VirtualHost>

<VirtualHost www.domain5.com>
...............
</VirtualHost>

And, of course, you need to set up the directories and fill them with
all sorts
of exciting web pages ;~)

Hope this helps, regards,
