What if he was to boot with a floppy linux version?  and then mount the
hd(x) 

I use Hal91 Linux whenever Windoze gives me problems with Logical Drives
that exist, but really don't.  I boot with Hal91 Linux, use the fdisk (as
this is a single user linux version there is no login) and then just delete
all partitions.  Works wonders.
