Is the Linux partition going beyond the 1024th cyl? Most BIOSes have
problems booting from areas beyond 1024 cyl, so maybe that's the reason the
Installer won't let you.
Make a partition under the 1024cyl limit, about 5MB, mount as /boot, and
copy the kernel there.
