I think the problem is most probably in the video card configuration.
You need to run Xconfigurator a few times, and try out a few values. 

Don't "Auto probe", just feed the values yourself, and try it a number
of times with values which you can get from your monitors manual.

XF86Setup will help you as well.
Which monitopr, and Video card are you using ?
