Try these books in the following order:

1. The Unix programming environment by Kerningham and
Pike.Prentice Hall India.(The book that will make you
fall in love with the unix environment as well giving
you the minimun knowledge to start programming in *nix
).

2. Advanced programming in the Unix environment(or
something similar) by Richard Stevens.Addison
Wesley..(The book that will give you almost all that
you need to to work in the *nix environment).

I would advice you to read the Linux Reading HOWTO by
ESR which gives a list of books that you should read
to work in Linux.

For ncurses, the best tip would be to go to the
ncurses home site and download the reference and to
see the source of an existing ncurses application.
