Product Announcement
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I am pleased to inform you that today, July 19, Sun will announce the
release of StarOffice source code to the open source community under
the GNU General Public License (GPL) and the Sun Industry Standards
Source License (SISSL.)

Sun is also announcing that OpenOffice.org will be formed and managed
by Collab.Net and will serve as the coordination point for the source
code. OpenOffice.org with also specify XML file formats for documents;
specify language-independent application programming interfaces (APIs;)
and provide Microsoft Office file filters to enable developers to
easily modify existing programs and customize specific applications to
fit their needs. Publicly accessible source code, project information,
and discussion forums will be available at http://www.openoffice.org .

StarOffice 6, the next version currently in development will serve as
the source code basis for OpenOffice.org.

The OpenOffice.org project has the following principle objectives:

- Establish open productivity file formats and component API's
- Provide open access to the source code
- Enable innovation which will build the next generation of open
  Network Productivity services.

The OpenOffice source code will be available on October 13, 2000. The
OpenOffice.org project has already begun and we are encouraging
involvement from the developer community today.

OpenOffice.org will be governed by the OpenOffice.org Foundation which
initially will be modeled on the Apache Software Foundation. The
OpenOffice.org Foundation's board will consist of members from the open
source community, the OpenOffice.org community, and commercial vendors.

Sun will continue to drive development of and aggressively market
StarOffice. Enhancements that Sun develops will be given back to
the community.

StarOffice is the only fully featured office productivity alternative
to Microsoft Office that is gaining momentum in the market place.
StarOffice
is the #1 productivity suite on Linux with all the top Linux companies
distributing it. The momentum of this open source announcement will make

it the biggest of the new millennium.

Sun is making this bold move because we believe that this type of
activity will expand the market for products based on open source
standards which will help us to sell incremental hardware and services.

We anticipate an overwhelmingly positive response from the open source
community and fully expect that this move will significantly strengthen
our position in the marketplace.
