I have used kfem ...
You have to tamper with the code to get it running for most common
applications.
BTW how can you solve heat transfer problems using kfem
I believe scilab is the best way to obtain numerical solutions to DEs..
I have some code written for particualr heat transfer problems ... I can
share it with you .
