Hmm... lots of probable reasons... try the following:

(1) While in X, open another terminal window and type the following in it:

tail -f /var/log/messages

(2) Now dial and observe the output. It will show you what the dialer is
doing... post this info, it will help locaing the exact problem.

(3) After the hadnshaking is over, try doing an ifconfig and look for the
ppp link.
