Thanx for the pointer ghane, I did fix it using update-rc.d, as you suggested, but the 
following was required:

# update-rc.d -f xdm remove
# update-rc.d xdm start 99 5 . stop 99 0 1 2 3 4 6 .

The first command removes (forced) the links from all /etc/rc?.d directories. Only 
then can we use the second command, otherwise update-rc.d just exits with a message 
like "....symlinks already exist"
