Hi All,

Is anyone aware of efforts to add support for SCSI and/or IDE DVD drives
to the Linux kernel? I am thinking about upgrading my 12x SCSI CDROM
with a SCSI DVD-ROM drive, and possibly a SCSI DVD-RAM in the future.

Thank you,

I know that 4 is not 11, but have you consulted the Sig11 FAQ?

Hello there,
I'm a 21 year old guy from the Faroe Islands with a question. The Faroe
islands are a small place with only 45.000 people, and when we're that small
there is nil chance that the major software companies are going to make
translations of their programs into faroese language. I'm wondering if it is
possible to make translations of linux software(both the OS and programs
like netscape etc) from english into other languages and how difficult such
a task would be. How much time would such a job take? weeks, months or maybe
years(?) or what? looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely Kal

That "configure" scripts generally use the program "gcc", as usually
explained in the INSTALL file, unless you tell them otherwise, e.g.
with
$ env CC=egcc ./configure  # append options

(Don't some distributions install the egcs gcc under the name "egcs",
besides?)

Yes, 2.1.1pre2 right now. I also recommend running unstable if you want to
use glibc 2.1 on Debian.

Subject: Windows not seeing Linux created DOS partitions
From: Arun Sharma <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi,

Here is a dump of my hard disk's partition table:

/dev/hda1 * 1 800 377968+ c Win95 FAT32 (LBA)
/dev/hda2 801 1024 105840 83 Linux
/dev/hda3 1025 3244 1048950 a5 BSD/386
/dev/hda4 3245 21210 8488935 5 Extended
/dev/hda5 3245 4328 512158+ 6 FAT16
/dev/hda6 4329 4545 102501 83 Linux
/dev/hda7 4546 8880 2048256 83 Linux
/dev/hda8 8881 20200 5348668+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda9 20201 20400 94468+ 82 Linux swap
/dev/hda10 20401 21210 382693+ 83 Linux

I created /dev/hda5 using Linux fdisk and formatted it using
dosfstools (mkdosfs). I can mount it from Linux just fine.

However, when I boot windows, I expected it to see the drive as the D:
drive. But for some strange reason, it doesn't. Is there a
non-destructive way of making Windows "see" /dev/hda5 ?

Thanks!

        -Arun

I don't think so. the pci version is the 3c590 (for 10-only). then
there's a 10/100 from 3com (forget the #).

due to the GPL nature of most linux apps, it shouldn't be to hard to change
all strings in sources and data files... How long this would take depends on the
amount of text in the application.

This is of course assuming that

        a) you don't use translations that are to long to fit in buffers or in
           precisely measured out screen decorations

        b) the program is written neatly.

Has anybody here done this already? If so, could I pass you some

I don't know.
In your binary directory you should have:
stdio-common/printf_fphex.*

The source is in sysdeps/generic/printf_fphex.c (or for m68k in
sysdeps/m68k/printf_fphex.c). You need to check why this file doesn't
define __printf_fphex.

You've hit on a very common problem that Windows has with extended
partitions:

If the last partition on the extended partition isn't Windows native, it
just ignores the whole extended partition (try Windows fdisk on
/dev/hda, bet it doesn't see anything). Move/remove /dev/hda5 to
/dev/hda10, and you'll probably be OK. Just back up everything on
/dev/hda[6-7-8-9-10] first...!

The Linux/ARM page is at
http://www.arm.uk.linux.org/~rmk/armlinux.html
Especially check out the "links" page.

AFAIK there is no support for the i960. Gcc does support it, though,
so the hardest (?) part of the battle is already won.

Some way to load a kernel, and some memory to play with. That means
either ROM, mass storage, network... and at least 4 MB of RAM. You'll
need comprehensive docs on the system components around your processor
(host bridge, MMU programming, and the like). Alan Cox can apparently
get Linux booting on brand new hardware in about a week or less (cf
his articles for Linux Journal about the mac68k port.) Mere mortals
will, I suppose, take a lot longer.

I upgraded from 2.0.36 to 2.2.1 and had the same problem.
Before upgrading, I had added the line
         options lp io=0x378 irq=7
in /etc/conf.modules in order to overwrite the default polling mode.

In kernel 2.2.1 config, I decided to use "kmod" instead of "kerneld".
Afterwards, I could not print anymore and I received a similar error
messages
when trying to print.

If you're using "kmod", this could probably help:
1. Examine if your printer has the appropriate device:
since kernel 2.2.x, parallel port #1 is /dev/lp0 (not lp1)
                                        parallel port #2 is /dev/lp1

2. This method worked for kmod, if you're still using kerneld, it won't
help!
   (I'm sure).
There is another difference between kmod and kerneld:
while kerneld removes unused modules after a while, kmod doesn't.
If you want removal of unused modules, configure crontab so to do.

3. In my own case, I had to add the following lines to /etc/conf.modules:

# /etc/conf.modules

# 2 lines are described in PATH_TO_KERNELSOURCES/Documentation/parport.txt
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
options parport_pc io=0x378 irq=7

# loads the necessary modules in the right order:
# 1. parport (generic) (2. parport_probe [optional])
# 3. parport_pc (architecture dependent) 4. lp
post-install parport insmod parport_probe
post-install parport_probe insmod parport_pc
post-install parport_pc insmod lp

"parport_probe" works properly on my PC, if it fails, skip the last three
lines to:
    post-install parport insmod parport_pc post-install
    parport_pc insmod lp

4. If you have any options specified for module "lp" in /etc/conf.modules
