Has anyone ever put some thought to a generlized kernel event notifcation
service. In particular I'm interested in getting process start/stop
change of state messages, which I currently get by polling /proc.

It would be nice not to have to poll, but to instead open a
/proc/kernel/eventService file and interact with it to
obtain the events of interest. I'm thinking one could write
into the file the events of interest, then simply read on
the fd for the events.

Perhaps one would have to be root, or setuid root to get
access to certain events. It would seem that a simple protocol
to the kernel would suffice in specifying what events are of
interest, either a two level mime like key pair or an object
path such as /process/state/anyChange or /process/state/changeToRun.

Such a mechanism could also be used for notifcation on any kernel
"object", i.e. memory, processors, devices ...

VMWare allows you to run 'virtual machines' inside Linux. It is not an emulator. It
provides a virtual computer within Linux which
can boot whichever OS you
decide to put on the filesystem image that is used as a harddrive. It will run DOS
6.22, Win 3.1, Win95, Win98, WinNT 4, Windows
2000 beta, Linux (many
flavours), and more. The only main requirement is a P-II 266 or better, along with
lots of ram (64 Mb minimum, 128 Mb recommended).

I got memory of PCI board by :

  pcibios_read_config_dword(pci_bus, pci_device_fn, PCI_BASE_ADDRESS_0,
&pci_memaddr);

in device driver.

Then, I want to read and write "pci_memaddr". How can I access that
memory area within

device driver?

Hi,
Typically the partition of Linux virtual memory is based on major areas
with a specific
addresses in a process space. For instance, in the file
/proc/<procID>/maps we can find the
VM boundaries of these areas, e.g.
    08048000-08085000 r-xp 00000000 03:06 2465 (for text area)
    08085000-08089000 rw-p 0003c000 03:06 (for data area)
    bfff6000-c0000000 rwxp ffff7000 00:00 0 (for stack area)

My question is which area the following addresses 400xxxxx-400xxxxx are
indicated ?

I am having trouble getting COL 2.2 to activate my modem and connect to my
ISP. I set up everything else just fine(i.e. dns, phone #,
username/password). It's in the device area that I'm having the problem.

The only setting that respont are ttyS1 and cua1, but when I try and
connect, they both say "Initializing Modem", (I never do here the modem
click like it should), then it says and stops at "setting modem sound".

It seems like linux can't find my modem. How do I fix this.

I resently rebuilt the kernel (2.2.8). The first time through, I used
make config, but I did not realize that kmod replaced kerneld (kerneld
would not work anymore) completely and answered no to the option:
CONFIG_KMOD.

Later I decided that I wanted to use kmod, so I ran make xconfig and
answered 'Y' to CONFIG_KMOD and ran make clean; make dep; make zImage;
make modules; make modules_install; cp arch/i386/boot/zImage
/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.8; lilo.

Now when I run: modprobe sound, I get the following error:

/lib/modules/2.2.8/misc/soundcore.o: unresolved symbol request_module
sound: No such file or directory

I found the request_module function defined in the kmod.c file. Which
should be included when turning on KMOD. I then ran depmod -ae and found
the following additional errors:

/lib/modules/2.2.8/misc/videodev.o: unresolved symbol(s)
        request_module
/lib/modules/2.2.8/misc/soundcore.o: unresolved symbol(s)
        request_module
/lib/modules/2.2.8/misc/sound.o: unresolved symbol(s)
        request_module
/lib/modules/2.2.8/net/ppp.o: unresolved symbol(s)
        request_module

Any ideas? Thanks for your help.

with ext2, filesystem size is 4TB, file size is 2G, on 32 bit platforms
(such as ia32). signifigantly larger on 64 bit machines (alpha,
ultrasparc), and SGI's open sourcing XFS sounds like it'll have larger
numbers.

Subject: $$$FORM HANDLER DESIGN BRIEF$$$
Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 19:40:10 +0100

This is a bona fide design breif. You will need to understand windows,
access97, e-mail and form handling to assist here.

There are two components to this design. A windows based interface and a
web based form. I am not sure how to do either, but I know it is possible
and need someone to, tell me how they intend doing it (I can have a
reasonably good instructive conversationas I am literate in database, html,
cgi etc - enough to make sense).

The windows based form interface is simple enough, I will design this using
FP98. What I need is the form handler to take one piece of information from
the form (it will only have one field) and post it to three places
simultaneously whilst also carrying two other pieces of information
(concealed from the user). Allow me to explain:

A surfer inputs their name and hits SUBMIT. Their name gets sent to a
database on the server which records their name in one field, the web site
address in another field (somehow this is attached to the form, hidden from
the user) and the extended date (mmddyy hh:mm:ss) - also hidden from the
user.

In addition to sending this information to the database, an e-mail is sent
with these three pieces of information, in the SUBJECT box it read something
like: Another User Signed In to a predetermined e-mail address.

The third place the information is received is a simple windows based
interface. In reality all this is, is an e-mail client that is constantly
connected to the internet and is all the time checking (say every 60
seconds) the same e-mail address (different from the one mentioned above)
for new mail. However, what the user sees is a simple form with three boxes
on it (this form is an Access97 form) - the form Refreshes every 60 seconds
and reveals the new 'e-mail' if one has arrived. The format is The Surfers
name (1st field), web page address (2nd field) and time/date (3rd field).

I have prepared a sample of how this form might look at th following
address:
www.everyco.net/delta/visitor.htm

As stated, this form must update itself (to the virtual server to check for
new mail) every 60 seconds using the REFRESH command in a macro - but how it
gets its information from the server I do not know - hence the reason for
this posting

It is worth notinh that in the second box, the Web SIte Address is a
Hyperlink - so whomever is using it can open the page

Then they can reject the three pieces of data or recorfd them in a simple
three field table.

That's it!

So what do you do and what will I do?

I can do everything except:

1. get the data from the form on the web site and get it sent to the
database (Acces 97) on the server (probably in a folder called database
curiously enough)

2. get the data into an e-mail saying "Another User Signed In"

3. get an e-mail client to capture text and somehow send it into a form in
Access so that I can do stuff with it

Finally, I am happy to assist or be hands off - your choice. However, i do
need control over the design of the final Access Interface and I will also
need to design the web interface too.

Please indicate a cost and time schedule - oh an how you wnt to be paid

As stated this is a bona fide enquiry - looking forward to your input

Thanks

Patrick Reynolds

there even was a patch so updated would not be necessary at all anymore.
