I'm a new convert to Red Hat (from Slackware).  I've performed a
"Server" install of "official" Red Hat 6.0 and noticed that the root
partition check is aborting and therefore the root partition never
gets checked.  I rebooted several dozen times while configuring the
system.  I've tried Red Hat's "on-line support" but it is horribly
broken and Red Hat's support manager admits as much but doesn't offer
any useful suggestions to resolve the issue (all email gets promptly
ignored, but that is another problem)...

My problem is that, in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit, the root partition is
checked with the command "fsck -T -a /" which causes the WARNING in
the attached logfile.:

  /dev/sda8 is mounted.
  WARNING!!!  Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause
  SEVERE filesystem damage.
  check aborted.

You'll note that rc.sysinit reports:

  Checking root filesystem succeeded

immediately after the check was aborted!  This is a most heinous lie!!

You'll also note that when enough reboots caused a forced filesystem
check, that the root partition has indeed gone unchecked since the OS
was installed:

  EXT2-fs warning: maximal mount count reached, running e2fsck is recommended.

Slackware 3.4 used -a with fsck, but used e2fsck-1.10, while Red Hat
6.0 uses e2fsck-1.14.  Did something change between 1.10 and 1.14 or
did fsck just get stupid?  How should I fix the fsck command in
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit?

Do you mind elaborating a bit on the "synchronization bug" that you wrote
about here? Is there a website that you can direct me to that covers this?

I'm asking this because I am seeing what appears to be a socket problem in
Win32, but am not sure that it's the same thing as the bug you wrote about.

  Me too. I had a kernel-source (2.2.9) and a .config file that worked
with RH5.2, but using those with RH6.0 gave me "kernel too big".
Also, using "make bzImage" might not help, since I later on get
problems with compiling my modules; I get errors from modules I
_didn't_ select... Well they are selected, but greyed out by an earlier
de-selection so they shouldn't have any influence on module
compilation, or what?
  Very strange...

  Any comments, ideas, help???
