Yes, fragmentation happens in some C++ programs. It also happens in C
programs that do the same work. In C++ you have more opportunities
to do something about it. Fragmentation doesn't happen in some
implementations of garbage-collected languages. OTOH, garbage-
collection is possible with C++ as well.
All variety of problems can arise coding in any language, for
any application. Problems that cannot be dealt with become language
problems. In that sense, fragmentation is not a C++ problem.
Hence, pointing to C++ and saying it suffers fragmentation problems
is FUD.

Not a RH thingy; try -D_XOPEN_SOURCE=199506L or -D_XOPEN_SOURCE=500 but
nothing else and do not use any __ defines. _XOPEN_XXX as above includes
the POSIX functionality and both have the same result, though the first
version looks more impressive 8-)

Hello:
There seems to have been a helluva lot of code added between kernel
versions 2.2.4 and 2.2.5. I had quite a bit of difficulty getting
2.2.5 going on two different servers (both running Red Hat 5.2) due
to "out of memory" errors. Even with most of the options built as
modules, and only choosing the bare minimum things (ie. scsi, ethernet,
file systems -- thank god I don't need sound card or other such frills
support!), and building the kernel as a bzImage, I still had lots of
problems.
The same kernel options built with 2.2.4 result in a *substantially*
smaller kernel -- about 100,000 bytes!! Doing a quick search on
www.dejanews.com, it is not too difficult to see that I'm not the only
person hitting this wall.
I'm wondering what was added that drastically increased the kernel
size, and if subsequent kernels have been better optimized for size
(I would expect this problem is only going to get worse as features
continue to be added to subsequent kernels).

But C++ templates _don't_ expand (macro-like) to C++ non-template
code. They expand to (if you will) RTLs, full of juicy details
for the optimizer that would be lacking in the otherwise-equivalent
hand-written C++ (or C) code.
For example: the result of a template function is a temporary,
and cannot be aliased. An optimizer can take advantage of this
knowledge. See the Blitz++ library for some extreme examples.
This doesn't mean that C++ template libraries _must_ be more
efficient than [something else], but it means that with significant
effort and a good optimizer (e.g. KCC) they _can_ be.
