Yeah, I have to conceed on that one. My favorite local radio station also
only uses .asp format. Wonder why so many ppl are using .asp when the sound
quality is so poor. Is MS giving the .asp server away with IIS now too?

Subject: Warning! -- SONY SUBSTANDARD SERVICE!
Date: Sat, 08 Jul 2000 21:19:15 GMT
Anyone considering the purchase of a Sony peripheral for their computer
might want to give it some further thought. There clearly is not a
reciprocal relationship between what they sell and what they service.
-
I purchased a CD-RW drive back in April that just recently went bad
(won't read). When I called Sony service, I was told that I could not
get a replacement and that I had to ship it across the country to be
"repaired" (and we all know what that means...) - with a three (3) week
turnaround. Assuming that they keep their 3-week commitment, with
shipping both ways, I'd be without the use of the unit for at least
five weeks!!!
-
I hardly think that's reasonable or fair.
-
Compare this to HP, who under the same circumstances would simply ship
you out a replacement unit and issue a call-tag for the old one.
-
Sony is a behemoth in the marketplace and as such, they have an
obligation to scale their service facilities to meet demand. To not do
so is an indication of their lack of commitment to customer satisfaction
and an unwillingness to stand behind their products.
-
Buyer be ware!

David,
Yes, the rtl8139 driver seems to work fine. I'm running it here on
2.2.14 with the SMC PCI card.
You shouldn't have to provide any parameters during insmod or modprobe.

Hello all,
Just got done making a custom boot disk but I am unable to login. The
following is what I see on the screen -
blackbox1 login: root
login[35]: invalid password for 'root' on 'tty1'
It doesn't even ask for a password. Does anyone know what causes this
behavior? I have the /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow and all the /lib/libnss_*
files in place. Do I have to do an ldconfig or something? Also, how do I
instruct the kernel to boot up in single-user mode?
Thanks.

Date: Sun, 09 Jul 2000 01:42:49 +0200
Dear usenet readers!
I need to limit the maximum number of processes per real user id on
my server, I thought it had to be done by modifying
/usr/include/linux/limits.h, and changing the following line:
#define CHILD_MAX 999 /* no limit :-) */
to this one:
#define CHILD_MAX 64 /* limited now! :p */
and then recompiling the kernel...
That's what I did, I installed it, LILOed it, and rebooted the
machine, but a getconf CHILD_MAX still returns a value of 999! I suppose
there's something to do I didn't do, but what?
I have a 2.2.16 kernel (with a Slackware distribution)...
Thanks in advance!

I have installed the newest "stable" devel. kernel. I still cannot get
pppd working. ppp.txt which is supposed to be included does not seem to
be there (find has not found it). In /var/log/messages I get input/ouput
errors and during boot I get ip_always_defrag not found. Can anyone give
me the documentation needed? By reading the files included w/ ppp-2.4.0,
I think I need to use ppp-on (edited) in conjunction w/
ppp-dialing-scripts (or some such, edited as well). Can anyone give me
some pointers? Merci beaucoup.

Hi,
I am planning to implement a low end Net aware device. The device will only have
1 serial and 1 ethernet interface. I plan to use CS8900A as my ethernet
controller. But I am still not sure about
what processor to use. The criteria for choosing the processor is the lowest
cost of the end product
I plan to Use an embedded Linux for the project
I am basically 4 processors
1. 8051 (not sure if it could handle the ethernet interface)
2. ARM based system-on-chips (from intel/cirrus)
3. x86 based systems.
4. low end MIPS (available from IDT, NEC)
5. 68K based microcontroller.
It would be great if anybody who has worked/evaluated the above microcontroller
and give your feedback on the bases of
a - Cost of the cost of microcontroller. (which vendor)
b - ease of design. Would definitely help if some design is already available
in the open source community.
c - which flavor of linux will be best suited
d - any other important criteria I am missed

Hi
Take a look at the pthread library
start with "man pthread_create"
and look also at "pthread_cond_wait" to see how you can suspend a
process on a condition.
you might want to man on pthread_join to see how to make one thread
wait for another to finish.
I hope this helps

There's one that does; I don't have a URL handy. Last time I checked, Debian
won big at the "rules" end. As a Debian developer, I like to think that it's
due to more than just the "debian/rules" scripts in Debian source packages.

Underlying your question there appears to be an assumption that
distributions are made to make money. While that holds for many
distributions, it definitely doesn't hold for all. Perhaps the best known
exception is Debian GNU/Linux, which is developed by volunteers.
> My first fear is that modified configuration files in /etc will get

The package management system I'm most familiar with (Debian's) stores
checksums of configuration files in /etc and uses them to have sensible
behaviour on updates. If you didn't change a config file, the one from the
updated package will be use. If you changed it, and the one shipped with the
package is changed as well, you will be offered the choice between
continuing to use your own version, or the one that's shipped with the
package.
I'm not very familiar with RPM, but I'd be highly surprised if it didn't
deal with configuration files in a similar fashion.
> I would have thought that the distribution software belongs in /usr, while

Indeed. Pay attention on whether (and how strictly) a distribution adheres
to the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (the successor to the FSSTND).
> (For networked pools, shared additional software belongs in /opt.)
Erm, in the FHS, /opt is for third-party software, network-shared or not.
> But I note that SuSe writes to both /usr/local and /opt. So my second

That may well be the case. In the case of Debian, the Debian policy manual
requires packages to comply with the FHS.
> Surely the one thing we can expect from a distribution is that it has up
> to date binaries all linking to the latest shared libraries.
I disagree. What I expect from a distribution is that it is well-tested and
well-integrated. I prefer libraries and programs to be as up to date as
possible within the limitation of being properly tested. Also, I expect a
distribution to have a reasonable degree of backward-compatibility in terms
of libraries, as many third party software producers (particularly big
commercial ones) do not use the most recent library versions.
In the case of Debian, the releases all go through one or more testing
cycles prior to being actually released. For example, the forthcoming Debian
release, 2.2 (aka "potato") is currently in its third test cycle. It
definitely doesn't have all the latest libraries and programs, but it will
have stability once it's released.
Of course if you always want the "latest and greatest" versions, you can run
the Debian "unstable" tree which is available for public download.

Hello!
We are two students writing our master thesis about open source

and how it works. Secondly, we want to compare the open source model
of developing software to traditional project groups working in
