i was having a similar problem, where diald would dial and then after some
number of seconds (30-40) it would disconnect and complain about an idle
link. this happened even when the only filter rule was "up"
couldn't figure it out and then i noticed an extra default route
with a gateway to the address of my machine!! arrrgh. when i deleted that
extra route diald worked fine.
dunno if this has anything to do with what you're saying though :-) its late
and i have no idea what i'm doing.
