Actually, we do know for sure: problems have been demonstrated to exist.
Since I routinely leave all active content (that the browser provides a
toggle for - I'd love to off those damned dancing gifs!) disabled, I
haven't been keeping a list of reports.  I do recall that there's at least
one "hostile java applets" web page.

If you're interested in these issues the Risks list (digested to
comp.risks) is an excellent starting point.
