E.10.5 How cna I configure my dialup PPP Internet connection?
These sites have excellent current PPP information.
http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/rhl/PPP-Tips/PPP-Tips.html
http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/rhl/Dialup-Tips/Dialup-Tips.html
In addition, The control-panel in X windows has a tool called netcfg that
will allow configuration of your modem.
To configure PPP, via the control-panel bar:
-Click 'Network Configuration'
-Click 'Interfaces' (at the top bar section of the screen)
-Then click 'Add'
-Click 'Ok' for PPP
-type in the "#", "name" and "password"
-Click 'Customize'
-Go into 'Networking' and select 'defaultroute' if you have a 'dynamic
IP', otherwise type in your IP information
-Then click 'Done' to save configuration.
-it should sho up in your interface table following this setup procedure
The [EMAIL PROTECTED] is also useful.
------
On a side note the PPP-Howto is quite useful.
If your ISP has PAP authentication, you can enter it from the interfaces
-> add box, if your ISP has CHAP authentication, go ahead and enter the
PAP info, then copy your pap-secrets file to chap-secrets:
# cp /etc/ppp/pap-secrets /etc/ppp/chap-secrets
You can bring the connection up and down from the Network configurator in
X using the Activate/Deactivate buttons or from the command line with
ifup ifdown:
# ifup ppp0
# ifdown ppp0
most of this information is available online. Good resources are the
LINUX Howto documents, the RedHat Tips and FAQs, and the LINUX usenet
groups (use Dejanews to do a search for instance, LINUX PPP).
Good luck
Peace favor your sword
