Ive just been looking at improving our diald setup, so I went back to the
origional filter file to see if there was a way
of improving the success of connections.

It seems that sometimes the link comes up on a domain request, but times out
before ppp is established, but this is not the problem I am writing about.

After restoring the origional file, what I see is as follows....
It seems that the filter line

accept any 30 any

brings the link up regularly with the reason

icmp remote.ppp.interface.address/257 local.ppp.interface.address/257

(these are not the real domain names of course)

This reason is there at intervals when the link is up or down, why?

Our system is using a fixed-registered local ppp address and a dynamic
remote address, when the link is down, diald sets this address to 0.0.0.0.
