A list for the discussion of dial up networking seems to be
the most inappropriate choice possible though!

What you _should_ do is exactly what it says - create a user
and group "informix" (this _is_ in the installation guide).
Whether you _can_ or not I have no way of knowing but the
evidence is against it.
