Yes, to save aggravation you should reserve an IRQ just for the serial
board.

Don't get an internal modem: they can't be powered down independently of
the computer. (And they don't have those nice blinkenlights, which are
actually *really* useful for diagnosing networking errors.)
As far as I can tell, most new high-speed serial boards are the same, but
I have limited experience. Maybe you should ask in the hardware group (or
read a FAQ).
To save yourself aggravation, get a modem exactly like your existing
modem, connect it to the second serial port, and connect the UPS to the
new third serial port.

You certainly won't need another set of binaries, so "rpm anything" is
right out. You should follow the instructions given previously for
multiple diald, but change the port for the second copy of diald to the
second modem. (Relatively) simple. :-)
