Tom,

I recommend you modify the standard.filter file, which states the 
timeout rules for packets.

The file is more or less self-explanatory, depending on your 
knowledge of tcp/ip.  As a newcomer, I found I was able to figure 
out what was going on after just a little tinkering with the file.  It 
allows quite a bit of control.

Or as a complete bypass of the standard.filter file, you could add 
something like this to your diald.conf file:

accept tcp 60 any
accept udp 60 any
accept any 60 any

This will give you 60 seconds of (idle) connect time each time 
before diald disconnects.  Each time it sees a packet, the timer will 
reset and you'll get another 60 seconds.  The standard.filter file 
allows you to better control than the above blanket rules.
