Thanks for the help.
I find a great PPP for beginners
at troubleshooters.com that had
some tips for monitoring the PPP connection
and debuging connect scripts.
I started again from scratch (without using
linuxconfig) to really understand the process and
got it working in short order. Then I added
diald and it ran fine.
Must have been some minor something somewhere.
