I've had the same problem, but I'm using a Cyclades multiport serial
card that shouldn't have any problem going fast. I tried a couple of
things, including upgrading the firmware on the TA (Bitsurfr Pro) to
the latest revision, upgrading diald to the latest patchlevel,
upgrading pppd to 2.3.3, etc.
I noticed that this problem doesn't occur right away--my line speed
is nice and fast, but degrades after a couple of days of being
connected to the provider (I use diald to maintain a continuous link,
rather than serving a demand function). What I did to work around
the problem was to set up a cron script that drops the connection and
immediately brings it back up once a day at 3 am, when nobody's
likely to be using the link anyway.
