I run a Linux 2.0.30 system with a number of Macintosh computers connected
through the local network.
The Macs may connect to the Internet via the Linux box using masquerading,
and this works fine: As soon as one of the Macs need Internet-services, a
DNS query makes diald (0.16.5) connect the line (via an external
ISDN-"modem") and lets the Macs connect to the Internet.
However, in recent versions of the Mac OS (it seems to be a problem with
both 8.0 and 8.1), the Macs make www-queries even *AFTER* Netscape and all
other
programs on the Mac have been shut down. It seems that some kind of cache in
the Macs keep calling some of the pages that have been visited at exectly
every two minuts. This, of course, keeps diald from shutting down the line.
If the offending Mac is rebooted the problem disappears until Netscape (or
Explorer) has been used again.
Any others with this problem? Any ideas on how to solve it?
(Is it possible to tweak the filter rules to make diald fix what I consider
to be an error in MacOS? Needless to say, Apple didn't even bother to
answer my
Email asking about what I guess are requests from a cache in MacTCP.)
