I tried the irqtune utility.  It seemed to make my connection faster but
I am still dropping packets.  Could this be a normal thing???

What kernel are you running? I had this problem with 2.0.36 in redhat
5.2 and
solved it by switching to 2.1.127. I even got errors on an idle machine.
Disk
activity didn't seem to affect the error rate at all. Never did figure
it out.

BTW, interrupt masking problems have always evidenced themselves as
framing
errors in my experience - and I've had a _lot_ of experience with them.
