The best way to figure out what is happening is tcpdump. As root (or make
it suid-root)
tcpdump -s 512
or
tcpdump -s 512 host win95_pc_name_or_ip_address
You can apply any number of filters/options to tailor the output. The -s makes
sure tcpdump grabs more of the packet than just the header.
In your case, the PC is probably doing a DNS lookup for the workgroup
name or something. Why, only redmond knows. You can try to either
put the workgroup name in \windows\hosts, or turn off LM announce or
something like that in the networking control panel.
META-QUESTION for the list
Also, it seems to me that the Diald FAQ is not working. The same (legitimate!)
questions come up on the mailing list again and again. Where is the faq? Why
isn't this (probably the #2 or #3 question) addressed sufficiently well? Where
is the system breaking down?
