ppp-on likely conflicts with diald ... both probably try to start ppp.
It's better to configure diald from scratch rather than trying to call the
ppp startup scripts.  About the only thing you can re-use is the chat
script if it's simple.  You may also have to comment a lot of options out
of your /etc/ppp/options ; see the diald man page.
