Routing only affects packets with destination different from your
computer. (Or destination different from the port at which they
arrive? Maybe some expert can clarify that point.) In effect,
routing only affects outgoing packets. So you should set up diald
to control the modem, and everything should be fine.
(One thing you might want to check: can your ppp0 and eth0 devices
have the same IP number? If not, check whether packets arriving
on eth0 destined for the IP number of ppp0 actually make it.
You'll probably have to watch your firewall rules carefully too.)
