Yes, the AF_NETLINK problem has shown up repeatedly and pretty much all
solved the same way you did.  The sigsegv problem is new, however. I
suggest that you run diald under gdb in -daemon mode to find out exactly
where this happens.  You may need to recompile again and replace the gcc
-O2 option with -g3 in order to debug.
