Hi Neil,
unfortunatly I'm using the latest version of diald 0.99.1 downloaded from
diald.unix.ch.
Before I had some other problems and they were fixed with the new version. Diald
already worked on my system.

I also had this problem with SuSE 6.1 ..... I upgraded to 0.99 from the
source tarball and it seemed to fix it?
I dont know the real solution........ but......
