No, it is the preferred interface if you are using a 2.2.x kernel but slip
continues to work perfectly well. If you don't want to use tap, just make
sure slip support in compiled in the kernel and turn off tap# modules (as
shown in the email you quoted) to stop the error messages. It will work
even with the error messages but my log files are big enough without adding
them as well. :)
