Please check local routing, give the results of 'route -n' in addition to
the results of ifconfig.

On many kernel 2.2.x machines the default route to ppp0 is not being
created.  We need to make sure that it is setup.

Also please give the kernel version, the version of pppd and the diald
version.  Some things changed between versions so it helps to know which one
when giving advice.

if a default route to ppp0 is in place (it isn't always) then you can try
adding
'asyncmap 0' to your pppd options.
