Can't get terminal parameters: Invalid argument

Hello.. Has anyone found the fix for the above message?? I have RH6 with an
external USR modem on ttyS1 and cant get it to work.. When the computer
inits the modem I get a light flash but the script dies.. I can get to the
modem with minicom..

and diald.conf and connect from diald.examples.
I updated /etc/conf.modules as in README.ethertap
