Thanks for all the hints on the modem - it's now nice and quiet. Now that diald's taken PPP up and down a few times (and the box has been rebooted), I just typed 'route' and got a huge list. It isn't removing routes when it drops the line. We're now up to ppp8, as follows: <ISP servername> * 255.255.255.255 UH 0 0 0 ppp8 (this appears TWICE), then later default * 0.0.0.0 U 0 0 0 ppp8 as you'd expect. All the previous routes down to ppp0 are also still there. Also, nothing is flagged "UG" any more. Diald appears to be working OK, but should it behave like this?
