I just ran into that on RH 6.0, and the people here helped. If you are on
RH, in '/etc/conf.modules' add the following lines:

        alias tap0 off
        alias tap1 off
        alias tap2 off
        alias tap3 off
        alias tap4 off
        alias tap5 off
        alias tap6 off
        alias tap7 off
        alias tap8 off
        alias tap9 off
        alias tap10 off
        alias tap11 off
        alias tap12 off
        alias tap13 off
        alias tap14 off
        alias tap15 off

That will eliminate a large number of the error messages, I also updated the
/etc/chap-secrets file with my user id and password, there is also another
secrets file depending on the security at your ISP (I think it's
pap-secrets). Make sure you tighten security on them! The other thing that
got me was using 'tail' to browse my /var/log/messages' file I was missing
an error message that apeared when I had eliminated the tapx error messages.
Good luck and ask again if this does not solve the problems.

Subject: diald connect problem, further information

Thanks for the help so far - things aren't working yet but I have more debug
information to share.
- I have now removed the pppd options file completely
- I am still using the same chat script for manual connection and diald -
manual works
- I have modified diald.conf to contain the ppp options that I think I need.

Both the chat script and the the diald.conf are attached to the bottom of
this message as is the error log I get from "tail -f /var/log/messages'.
Unfortunately, diald still seems to behave as before. There do seem to be a
lot of messages in the log but they don't mean much to me - help!

My chat script:

ABORT 'NO CARRIER'
ABORT 'NO DIALTONE'

My diald.conf:
