Sounds reasonable. So what should I put in my diald.conf file for
the connect command? Right now, it simply calls ppp-on.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't diald fire up its own pppd,
such that you
don't need to /usr/sbin/pppd in your ppp-on script. My guess is that
diald calls
ppp-on, ppp-on calls pppd, and after ppp-on unblocks, diald calls
pppd, so you
have 2 pppd's running???
